You know when you go on holiday and all of a sudden your wardrobe completely flips into a colourful melting pot of vibrancy and print, but the rest of the year it’s a strict uniform of jeans and t-shirts on repeat? Well, that’s me all over. But this summer I vowed to work some of that vacay feel-good into my everyday attire.

Our trip to Portugal at the start of June was fleeting and with nothing planned until September, getting that faraway shores fix for summer staycationing is an absolute must. Someone just needs to have a word with the weather.

The aim is to inject as much punch and zing into on and off duty ensembles as physically possible. Pom poms? I’ll take them on my bag and my top thank you. Deckchair stripes? Load me up. Kitsch mirrored sunnies? Lined up and ready to go. I’m structuring my whole high summer vibes around a beach hut boho feel. It’s sort of British retro coastal with a touch of Marrakesh magic. Think washed out stripes and denim, amped up with rainbow pom poms and metallic highlights.

To The Coast

Of course I can’t ignore the wonder that is this outrageously good location. Mersea Island is right by where I grew up in Essex. One side of town is know for its native oysters and more specifically The Company Shed (eat in and BYOB, take away, lashings of vinegar or straight up – you decide how to have your dozen). The other side is where all the local kite surfers go to catch the wind, while their partners (no names mentioned) plonk themselves on the beach directly adjacent to the sweep of candy coloured huts, pretending their in South Beach, Miami, taking heaps of snaps.

Make A Splash

A lightweight, breezy top is probably the easiest boho beach buy around. Zone in on kaftan shapes, keep them loose and find something semi-sheer so you can let a splashy bikini top or cossie peep through. I generally opt for these kind of cover-up tops for British beaches, parks or festival fields because unlike a dress, you can whip off a top to tan in your swimmers while keeping a pair of denim cut off’s on the bottom half. Max bronze-ability while keeping things low-key. This Zara beauty is spot on, actually a dress but tucked in 100% more like a top on a regular bod, and the best bit is the cluster of rainbow pom poms. So good. Unlike everything else in store right now, this is still full price from the new season line.

Keep Your Cool

Woven metallic mules provide an on point flattie option and alternative to strappy sandals. This Next style also comes in gold and they’re super comfy. Everyone knows a straw bag is a no-brainer add-on, and let’s face it, you can’t carry one in the height of winter so go for it and plunge for the pom pom topped version. This Pimkie at Asos one is a winner.

The perfect over-swimmers look. For the not so warm summer days (that’s most of the British summertime then) switch in your trusted pair of jeans, wrap around a beachy scarf and go for trainers and a brolly when it’s wet.
